BCU World Class Programmes - GB Canoeing
The BCU World Class Programme is dedicated to supporting the most talented British athletes in the Olympic disciplines of Canoe Slalom and Sprint Racing to win medals at the highest level. Having consistently won Olympic medals since 2000, the sport gained its first Olympic Champion in 2008. Our overall aim is to win more gold medals in 2012.

The GB Canoeing Olympic Programme is based at two High Performance Centres in Nottingham and Bisham Abbey, near Marlow. The BCU World Class Programme operates a no compromise philosophy and delivers excellence through continuous improvement.

Our Vision:
To be the number 1 Olympic Canoeing Nation with success and depth of
excellence at every level

Our Mission:
To consistently win medals at significant international competitions

The attention and focus of the BCU World Class Programme has now shifted towards the London Olympic Games in 2012. The GB Canoeing Summary Performance Plan outlines the key lessons learned from the Beijing Olympic cycle 2004-2008 and demonstrates the potential for GB Canoeing to deliver in 2012. The year on year Performance targets are included in the Plan.

The outcome target for GB canoeing for the London Olympic Games is to win 3 Olympic medals and two of these to be Gold medals. To achieve our Olympic medal target we believe that we need to make significant enhancements and changes to our Programme moving forward. These changes are in 4 main areas as follows:

  • Individual athlete performance improvement and commitment
  • Improve the level of World Class Technical Coaching
  • Access to World Class Medical and Sports Science Support
  • Technology and Innovation

The London Olympic Games offers a wonderful opportunity for everyone involved in the sport of canoeing to be a part of the greatest ever sporting event to take place in the UK in our lifetime. We believe that we can achieve our targets in 2012 through:

  • A ‘no compromise’ philosophy in creating a World Class environment for our athletes
  • Raising the bar in terms of our commitment and training philosophy
  • Regular testing, benchmarking and evaluation of our training process
  • Leaving no stone unturned to increase the Performance gains of our athletes.
